Pim Ronhaar will make his long-awaited road debut at the biggest stage as trainee with Lidl-Trek next Monday, when Vuelta a Burgos takes off from Vilviestre Del Pinar. It remains to be seen whether he can follow in the footsteps of his younger teammate Thibau Nys who has already made a big name for himself in the professional peloton.
We know Ronhaar as a world-class cyclocrosser for Baloise - Trek Lions, but he is also a very accomplished road racer. For example, the 23-year-old Dutchman won the Fleche du Sud this year, a stage in the Tour de la Maribelle and competed for top places in competitions such as the Antwerp Port Epic and Dwars door het Hageland.
Due to illness he had to miss the Baloise Belgium Tour, where In de Leiderstrui spoke to him about his plans for the summer and his traineeship at Lidl-Trek. "I'm really looking forward to it. I hope I can ride some nice races abroad, with the necessary hills. I hope to show myself there," he said at the time.
Lidl-Trek has already responded to these ambitions with a Vuelta a Burgos nomination. Ronhaar will join a strong team, which also includes compatriots Bauke Mollema and Sam Oomen. Furthermore, Jacopo Mosca, Patrick Konrad, Tao Geoghegan Hart and Quinn Simmons will be there. The latter two will make their comeback after a period full of bad luck.
