Phil Bauhaus has been relatively consistent so far in the
Giro d'Italia, however he's lacked everything to click into place to be in the battle for a stage win. That however changed today, as the German sprinted to second place in Cuneo, however disappointed with how close he was to a big win.
Bahrain - Victorious didn't put their nose to the wind throughout the day, however hit the front in the final kilometers when it mattered, ramping up the pace in the slight ascent to the line. “It was a hard and fast day. We caught the breakaway with 500m to go, and the last km was slightly uphill, making it super hard. The team positioned me quite well with 1.5km to go," Bauhaus said in a post-race interview.
"I could then start my sprint, which was a free sprint to show what was possible for me. But I’m super disappointed for second place. It’s a good result, but if you are so close, you want to take the win for the team here, and it would have been nice," he explained.
It was the closest he's ever been from a win in a Grand Tour, which would've been a very important milestone in the 27-year old. "I think there is one more chance for sprinters, so maybe I can do one place better next time," he concluded.
