Team DSM had been working towards the ambition of having Romain Bardet in the final podium of the Giro d'Italia, and the plan seemed to be working well as both unity and success were seeing a motivated team ride through the streets of Italy. However, on stage 13, things took a sharp turn for the Dutch team as Bardet was forced to abandon.
“During yesterday’s stage Romain started to feel unwell with stomach complaints. We tried to manage the situation during the race to get him through the day before he could take some rest in the evening, but unfortunately we saw little improvement overnight," said team doctor Anko Boelens.
"We tried all we could to continue but today I had nothing left in me to get through the day," Bardet added. He started the day in fourth place in the overall classification, but has seen the work of months go down the drain as stomach issues took over him over yesterday's stage - and did not permit him to go on during today's.
Team DSM will now re-access it's goals. Whilst Alberto Dainese and Cees Bol have one more opportunity to sprint in the third week, the focus should now be on Thymen Arensman who stands as the new team leader - currently 11th in the overall classification and third in the youth classification.
