Arnaud Démare has taken his third stage win at the
Giro d'Italia for
Groupama - FDJ, as the break of the day was caught inside the final kilometer leading to a thrilling finale to the 13th stage of the race.
The breakaway set off early in the day with Pascal Eenkhoorn (Jumbo-Visma), Julius van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost), Filippo Tagliani (Drone Hopper - Androni Giocattoli), Nicolas Prdohomme (AG2R Citroën Team) and Mirco Maestri (EOLO-Kometa). As the riders went up the categorized climb of the day Tagliani was dropped, as the gap grew to over six minutes.
Groupama - FDJ, Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team, Israel - Premier Tech and UAE Team Emirates worked together to bring the gap down, however quite slowly as the front quartet worked well together towards the finish.
It seemed as if the breakaway could succeed, however in the final kilometer hopes were cancelled as the four riders could not resist the change of pace within Cuneo already, with the slight uphill grade to the line. Groupama closed the gap, and had the leadout in the end to be able to position Démare towards the sprint.
The Frenchman was the first rider to launch his sprint, as no-one had the power to be besides him towards the line, except for
Phil Bauhaus who came with speed from behind but could only manage second place.
Mark Cavendish finished fourth.
