Pauline Ferrand-Prévot has won the 2025
Tour de France Femmes, ending the long wait for a French winner of the Maillot Jaune. On the final stage this Sunday afternoon, she secured the GC in style by taking a solo victory in Châtel Les Portes du Soleil.
With around 94km to go on the stage, Team SD Worx - Protime's Anna van der Breggen went solo at the front of the race, attacking from a small group that had formed on the opening climb of the day. More than nine minutes down in the GC, there was no immediate Maillot Jaune threat from the Dutch legend, and with climbs of the HC Col de Joux Plane and Cat 1 Col du Corbier to come, Van der Breggen's hopes of stage win didn't look great either. As the Col de Joux Plane began, however, her lead over the peloton was around two minutes.
There was almost immediate drama in the GC group on the as Cedrine Kerbaol crashed at the foot. Having started the day 5th overall, the chase was then on for the EF Education-Oatly leader. By the top of the Joux Plane, Van der Breggen was still clear by around 50 seconds from a much-diminished GC group. Kerbaol meanwhile, was completely distanced, more than three minutes down from the front.
On the descent, the fight for the podium then ignited as
Demi Vollering and
Katarzyna Niewiadoma attempted to put the pressure on Sarah Gigante, who started 2nd overall but is well-known for being one of the worst descenders in the peloton. The tactic was working too, as the Aussie climbing ace started to get distanced almost immediately.
With Gigante left all alone, by the time the Col du Corbier began, she was nearly two minutes down on her GC rivals. Not helping Gigante's plight, however, was the fact that the GC group was working well together up ahead, so well, in fact, that with 33km to go, Van der Breggen was caught and immediately dropped out of contention at the back.
As Niewiadoma continued to relentlessly keep the pace high, Gigante's distancing was only going out, bumping the Aussie off the podium. At the front meanwhile, only an elite group of riders remained alongside Niewiadoma, those being the Maillot Jaune Pauline Ferrand-Prevot, plus Demi Vollering, Juliette Labous,
Niamh Fisher-Black and Dominika Wlodarczyk.
With a final little kicker coming at 7km to go, Vollering immediately upped the pace, although the only rider she managed to drop was teammate Labous. As Vollering's attack then stalled,
Ferrand-Prevot countered and immediately got herself a gap at the front. From the moment the rest of the group started to look at each other, a second successive stage win was secured for the Maillot Jaune.
