The stage was one that had a very open profile, however it became evident that some riders were interested in turning it into a GC day. Despite lacking any big climb throughout the day, Israel - Premier Tech stretched the peloton in the descent before the final climb of the day where Patrick Bevin attacked in the steep ramps at the base. The Kiwi took
Jay Vine and
Nicolas Edet with him, and the trio carved a gap between themselves and the chasing group - having distanced race leader Eduardo Sepúlveda.
With the likes of Groves and van Poppel in the chasing group there was motivation to bring the trio back, however not the legs as only one BikeExchange rider helped Sepúlveda in the flat run-in to the line.
The trio collaborated well in front until the final kilometers, where Edet and Vine seeked to attack towards the stage win. However their plan backfired as Bevin had the legs to respond, and then put an attack of his own in the final kilometer to take a stage win.
