The hierarchy is particularly notable given the experience around Onley. Rodriguez has already finished sixth and 10th overall at the Vuelta, while Haig reached the final podium with third in 2021, but INEOS have explicitly put the 23-year-old Scot at the head of their challenge.
Onley given freedom to lead after Vuelta a Burgos return
Onley's first season with INEOS has included several setbacks, but his form returned at exactly the right time. He won a stage at the recent Vuelta a Burgos and finished second overall, giving the team confidence to place him in charge when the Vuelta begins in Monaco on Saturday.
“This is Oscar's first Grand Tour riding for us and he is ambitious, excited and wants to get racing,”
Director of Racing Geraint Thomas said. “He has had some setbacks this season, but his win in Burgos showed that he has recovered well and has good legs. We know what he is capable of so we are giving him the freedom to just go and race, and enjoy it.”
It will technically be Onley's second Vuelta appearance. His first, with Team DSM-firmenich in 2023, lasted only two stages after he broke his collarbone and was forced to abandon following the team's victory in the opening team time trial.
Three years later he returns not only with the opportunity to complete the race for the first time, but as the designated leader of one of the strongest climbing groups on the startlist.
“I’m really excited to be lining up for La Vuelta and my first Grand Tour with the team,” Onley said. “We’ve got a good mix of riders giving us a lot of opportunities throughout the race. Personally I’m feeling really good just now and looking forward to testing myself in the coming weeks!”

INEOS fully support Tarling's decision to race
Tarling's inclusion comes in extraordinarily difficult circumstances after the death of his 19-year-old younger brother Finlay during the Volta a Portugal last week.
Finlay was racing for NSN Development Team when he died following an accident during Stage 8 on August 14. His death prompted tributes from teams, riders and figures across the cycling world.
Josh has chosen to continue with his planned Vuelta participation and INEOS made a point of publicly backing that decision when announcing their squad. “It also goes without saying that, as a Team, we all fully support Josh in his decision to take part in the race,” Thomas said.
The sporting programme places Tarling immediately in contention for a major result. The Vuelta opens with a technical 9.4-kilometre individual time trial through Monaco, two years after he finished sixth in the opening Lisbon time trial on his race debut. The 22-year-old also arrives having completed his first Tour de France earlier this summer.
Rodriguez, Haig and Turner add proven Vuelta pedigree
Onley's supporting cast contains considerably more Vuelta experience than the team's leadership choice might initially suggest. Rodriguez finished sixth overall on his debut in 2022 before returning to take 10th in 2024. His 2026 season has included second overall at the Tour de la Provence and fourth at the Tour of Austria, giving INEOS another rider capable of remaining deep into the hardest mountain stages.
Haig owns the best previous Vuelta result in the squad, having finished third overall in 2021. The 32-year-old Australian adds another experienced climber to the group around Onley.
Svestad-Bardseng will make his Vuelta debut but already has two Giro d'Italia appearances behind him, including 24th overall earlier this season. INEOS have identified the Norwegian as a rider with long-term GC potential, and he adds another climbing option at only 23.
Turner returns with more recent success at the race. The Briton claimed his maiden Grand Tour stage victory at the 2025 Vuelta and added two further top-eight finishes during the three weeks. He also showed encouraging form shortly before this year's race with second on the opening stage of the Czech Tour.
Laurance makes his Vuelta debut after twice finishing inside the top four on stages of the recent Tour de Pologne, giving INEOS a fast option on hilly and reduced-group finishes. Hamilton completes the eight with further Grand Tour experience and climbing support.
