Groupama - FDJ starts the
Tour de France without two of it's initially scheduled leaders. David Gaudu did not get good form ahead of the race and Stefan Küng was injured from a crash pre-national championships... The team has called in a British substitude and will be chasing stage wins with their French leaders.
At the top of the hierarchy, if there is one within the team, will be
Romain Grégoire. The young puncheur won the opening stage of the Tour de Suisse with a strong solo win and came close to the French title this weekend. Although he is a strong rider for the breakaways, he could equally take an opportunity on the first week taking into consideration the amount of hilly days the race organizers have provided.
In the mountains the team will almost exclusively depend on
Guillaume Martin to perform. Stage wins would be the most logical goal for the 32-year old, but after a Top10 at the Criterium du Dauphiné, we could see him chase both at the same time or even fully focus on the overall classification in what is his first Tour outside of Cofidis.
Paul Penhoët will be the team's designated sprinter for the flat days, although he will have a big challenge against around a dozen of the world's very best sprinters.
Lewis Askey, the only non-Frenchman in the lineup, will be an interesting rider for the explosive finales of the first week;
Valentin Madouas will also be aiming for success in the hilly days (perhaps even the final stage, as he was silver medal last year in the Paris Olympic Games); whilst the lineup is complete by
Cyril Barthe,
Quentin Pacher and
Clément Russo.
