Every year, very few countries have the pleasure of organizing any of the major international races on the cycling calendar. On the road, the desired events are the World Championships and the
European Championships, basically the same as in cyclo-cross. Well, Dutch fans will get lucky twice in 2028.
Coinciding with the centenary of the Dutch Cycling Union (KNWU), the country will host two of the most important events on the calendar: the European Road Championships and the World Cyclocross Championships.
The two races are highly followed and awaited, not only by the fans, but also by the riders themselves. Without going any further, the latest winners of the European Road and World Cyclocross Championships are Tadej Pogacar and Mathieu van der Poel, possibly the two best cyclists in the current cycling peloton.
The KNWU has conceived 2028 as a thematic year dedicated entirely to the sport, an annual program that will make the country a major cycling hub in the middle of the Olympic year. Each discipline will have its time and place in a project that spans several regions.
North Brabant, absolute protagonist
The first province to join the so-called Dutch Cycling Festival is North Brabant, which will assume much of the limelight. The European Road Race will be held there, while the World Cyclocross Championships will return to Hoogerheide for the fourth time in its history.
The plan goes beyond road cycling and mud: Brabant will also once again host the BMX Freestyle European Championships, an event that was already held in Eindhoven in 2025.
Mathieu van der Poel holds the most Cyclocross World Championship titles, tied with Erik de Vlaeminck
Organizers Libéma Profcycling and Golazo announced the return of BMX Freestyle with a clear message: The event will return "to the place where the sport and the urban community really connect".
With all these championships spread across the country, the Netherlands is preparing for an unprecedented 2028, where cycling will be a central part of the country's sporting life.
