Bici.PRO spoke with Antonio Tiberi, of
Bahrain - Victorious, following his performance at the Volta ao Algarve. The five-day race
covered a total of 748 kilometres, with Tiberi experiencing mixed results, struggling
on the first uphill finish but securing an impressive third place in the final
time trial, proving he is in strong form.
Having returned home to continue training, Tiberi reflected
on his progress and growing media attention.
"I'll stay home for a little bit," Tiberi said.
"So much interest is only a pleasure and with the passing of time you get
used to it. I tend not to think about it too much and do my job in the best
possible way. In 2024, doing things at my best, I managed to perform at my
best. This gave me a lot of morale and the awareness that working well allows
me to feel good on the bike and off the bike."
The Italian rider was pleased to be back in race action, "It
went well. Attaching the number again and experiencing the sensations that only
racing can give you is nice, I had missed it. I also had the opportunity to
spend time with my companions before the race and have fun with them. Breathing
the atmosphere of the race is always pleasant."
His preparation included a high-altitude training camp on
Teide, which provided valuable conditioning.
"I was happy with the sensations I had and what I felt.
I was coming from two weeks of altitude on Teide. It was the first training
camp at altitude and the first race, the final feedback is positive. I missed
the pace a bit on the climbs but I expected it.
“Anyway, when you go to altitude, you never do too much
intensity. The final time trial showed that the leg is good and it was a
confirmation of what I have done."
Tiberi approached the time trial with a clear strategy and
took confidence from his strong showing.
"I still wanted to enjoy the moment with awareness. For
example, I knew that the time trial was suited to my characteristics but I
approached it with the right mindset. It was also a test to see how the engine
reacted and understand if any warning lights had come on. Instead, it went well
and this gave me morale."
Looking ahead, Tiberi outlined his key objectives for the
coming months, "The Algarve was the starting point of this racing season
right from the start. Since November, everything has been calibrated to be
ready for the Corsa Rosa.
“Now I will go to the Tirreno with the desire to have a
better pace and do something more. Once that race is over, I will return to the
highlands to attach the number once again at the Tour of the Alps. I would like
to get to these races to try to get some results and have feedback on the
general progress and understand how I am working, always with the aim of
arriving at the Giro ready and competitive."
Tiberi also emphasized the structured approach his team has
taken in planning his season.
"The staff works globally to ensure that everything is
managed in the best possible way. The project is structured year by year and
from the beginning of the season, we already know how we will work. There are
no pre-established objectives. This year I will be at the Giro to confirm the
progress of 2024, but it is not excluded that next season I could go to the
Tour."
