Movistar has been under fire over the past few months as Oier Lazkano has been provisionally suspended by the UCI over biological passport anomalies that have been recorded during his time at Movistar, whilst
former rider Vinicius Rangel failed to report on his whereabouts on three occasions during a 12-month period, leading to a suspension of almost two years. Seemingly, the Brasilian rider was not the only one not reporting his locations, as Ruben Guerreiro is reported to have done the same and he has been cast aside from the team silently.
The 2026 season has now started and within Movistar there are a few new fresh faces such as Roger Adrià, Cian Uijtdebroeks and Raul Garcia Pierna. Gone are veterans such as Fernando Gaviria and Davide Cimolai; and also two riders that do not have a contract for 2026: Antonio Pedrero and Ruben Guerreiro. The Portuguese rider has not been renewed with the Spanish team and was not at its presentation, which confirms his departure from the team. One that was ultimately unannounced, a relationship that ended privately within the ranks of Movistar.
However there may have been a reason why the team did not communicate regarding Guerreiro, as
AS reported that during the 2025 season he failed to report a trip in the ADAMS (Anti-Doping Administration System), the same situation that led to Rangel's suspension. Whilst Guerreiro only had one infraction, which does not lead to direct consequences, it raises questions. All professional riders must report their locations so that anti-doping authorities have the possibility of carrying out doping tests all-year round, whilst the use of medication of foreign substances that can potentially lead to a positive test must also be reported beforehand.
Future and career on the line
But there are no given explanations on what led to that incident, or what will be of the 31-year old. A set of lingering issues, most notably a hernia suffered in January 20204, have continued to affect the Portuguese throughout the 2025 season, not allowing him to reach the level he has had in the past which saw him win a stage and KOM jersey at the 2020 Giro d'Italia, the Mont Ventoux Dénivelé Challenge in 2022 and the AlUla Tour in 2023 which was his first race with the Spanish team. Sources have told CyclingUpToDate in December that it is unlikely for Guerreiro to continue his career at continental level in Portugal and that retirement from the sport is ultimately the most likely scenario, as he has not been able to overcome his physical problems yet.
