Months of preparation pay off for Mohoric at Milano-Sanremo: "I can't believe I managed to stay away until the finish"

After an impressive performance, Matej Mohoric has gotten the biggest win of his career today by winning Milano-Sanremo. The Bahrain - Victorious rider did a conservative race, and has done only one attack which in the end proved to be decisive enough to take home the first monument.

"It was on the limit. At the end it was all worth it, the whole winter of starting, analyzing, testing the bike and equipment, I'm lost for words. I need to thank every single member of our team Bahrain - Victorious, all the mechanics, Merida and all our suppliers; FSA for working with us [who made the dropper post Mohoric used on the final descent to his profit]," Mohoric said.

"I knew I had a plan, we had a plan to do my best, to be conservative in the Poggio, I tried to follow the best and gradually come back over the top and just do the best descent I possibly could. I knew with the dropper post I had big advantage, I tested it many times in training, I knew exactly how to use it and I knew it was very hard for whoever was going to be behind me to keep up." Mohoric's use of a dropper post has gathered a lot of attention. Whilst it has been used in the past - very rarely - it is possibly being popularized by the Slovenian after he's taken advantage of his descending skills to conquer the race.

Mohoric followed the wheels throughout the day, as UAE Team Emirates made the race hard. He waited until over the Poggio to make his move, and as soon as he got a gap it became clear he was the man to beat, he was not caught however: "I was pushing the limits a little bit, in that last corner I lost all the speed and a bit of time, I was also very cooked because my condition is not the best after the crash, I can't believe I managed to stay away until the finish."

"I think this is the biggest victory at my career. The Tour is the Tour, but this one was studied and planned. We had a plan in advance and we made it work 100% and that is very rare in cycling," he concluded.
