Michal Kwiatkowski found great form at the Tour de France and he's putting it to use at the Tour de Pologne. INEOS Grenadiers came with a strong team but one that's preparing for the Vuelta a Espana, the Pole managed to lead the team on home roads and came close to the victory.
“It was a dynamic final. There were some accelerations before the attack of Matej and Almeida and so I didn't have that extra kick to follow them," Kwiatkowski said into the microphone of Wielerflits. The British team worked hard in the lead-up to the climb to position him as well as possible, having the home motivation and great legs from the Grand Boucle, it seemed as if this finale was very well suited to his chances.
He played his cards right waiting for the sprint, following the head of the GC group, however when Matej Mohoric launched the final sprint he didn't have the legs to follow. No-one except for João Almeida had, but the veteran was the best of the rest, crossing the line in third place and placing himself as the team's card for the overall classification in the process.
"It is what it is. It's only the second stage, I would have loved to win for my fans, but the last word has not been spoken yet," he assures. "I will continue to fight for it. I tried to recover as much as possible and I felt good. Hopefully tomorrow we will have a fair fight on the climbs and then the time trial, but tomorrow's stage is one of the hardest."
