Trek - Segafredo's Mattias Skjelmose Jensen is one of the most complete and promising stage-racers in the peloton and this weekend he sealed his first podium at the Tour de la Provence, taking the youth classification alongside aswell.

At the end of the race, where he finished third to make for his first podium in a stage-race since turning professional, he had comments regarding it: “After the prologue, which was a good way to start the race, the next two stages were nervous, but as a team, we kept things well under control. Today was obviously different. We not only had to be on point but also manage energy and strength to be competitive until the finish.”

“I’m very happy with my performance here in France. The stage result and the final GC result make me super happy, but first of all, I want to share all this with my teammates," he complemented.

A product of Trek's development team Leopard Pro Cycling, the Dane turned pro with Trek-Segafredo in 2021 and quickly gathered a 6th place in the also wind-swept UAE Tour. Having thrived again here in Provence, it forms a pattern of a rider who has a lot of quality on the bike besides the power.

After surviving the crosswinds on the second stage in Provence, he went onto the final day in fifth place in the overall, but he only went up from there as he finished runner-up to Nairo Quintana on the stage and climbed to the podium behind the Colombian and Julian Alaphilippe: “In the very last kilometers the fatigue was a lot, we were pushing hard, but when I saw that Sosa was reachable I pulled out all the energy to sprint and repay the work of my team."

“Having Amanuel and Kenny at my side was a great support. I gave everything and I’m happy that it helped to get such a good result. Performances like these give a lot of awareness. For the goals I’ve shared with the team for 2022 and my personal expectations in the season, it’s an important boost of confidence and trust.”

With a Danish Grand Depart no doubt Skjelmose will be eyeing it, for now though the Tour des Alpes Maritimes et du Var and the Volta a Catalunya are his biggest goals.
