Alberto Contador has given his opinion on which cyclist will win the 5 monuments of cycling first,
Tadej Pogacar or
Mathieu van der Poel. With the triumphs of the Slovenian in the Tour of Flanders and the Dutchman in Paris-Roubaix both are 2 away from winning them all.
Pogacar has already won the Tour of Flanders, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Il Lombardia. Van der Poel has won Flanders and, since this year, Milano-Sanremo and Paris-Roubaix. The UAE rider is missing Roubaix and San Remo and the Alpecin rider is missing Il Lombardia and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Both are now tied in the amount of individual monuments they've covered and they may be this generation's most likely contenders to do what only a few riders in cycling history have achieved.
The Giro, Tour and Vuelta winner spoke on Eurosport's La Montonera program and explained that for him Pogacar is going to win the 5 monuments first. The key for the Pinto rider is in the difficulty that van der Poel may have to win the Giro de Lombardia:
"I'm going for Pogacar, I think he can perfectly contest Roubaix, maybe this year would have been a good option to go accumulating experience," 'El Pistolero' commented. "I think it would have been a good participation by Pogacar as long as he would have been lucky and Mathieu, yes, but I think Lombardia can count him a little bit more with respect to other riders."
