Luis León Sánchez is the rider with the most days of competition in the year of his retirement

Luis León Sánchez has already taken his last pedal stroke as a professional cyclist. The rider from Murcia has decided to hang up his bicycle after almost two decades in the elite and has done so after a 2023 in which, incredibly, he has been the cyclist who has raced the most days of competition.

The Spaniard has raced for the Astana Qazaqstan Team for a total of 90 days in 2023, including two grand tours such as the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España and other stage-racess such as the Tour Down Under, the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, the Paris-Nice, the Itzulia Basque Country, the Tour of the Alps or the Vuelta a Burgos. He also started the Tour de France, but had to abandon on the fifth stage.

Behind Luisle there are 3 riders with 88 days of competition (Larry Warbasse, Domen Novak and Michel Ries), two others with 87 (Lennert Teugels and Alexander Konychev) and another with 86 (Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier). Closing the top 10 are Mikel Landa (85), Rui Costa (84) and Cees Bol (84). Note that Egan Bernal, a year after almost losing his life in a crash, has been able to race 79 days.
