Lennard Kämna and Aleksandr Vlasov haven't shown their best level in the opening days of the Tour of the Alps, but on stage 3 everything came together. The BORA - hansgrohe duo finished first and second on the queen stage, with the German benefiting from an early attack.
“Looks like stage 3 is always good for me here as I already took it last year," Kämna said in a post-race interview. "I knew that I had to go early as I still miss the explosiveness to follow the hard attacks in the final. I attacked quite early and was able to ride a good speed."
Kämna attacked with just under 6 kilometers to go and was joined by Jefferson Cepeda. As INEOS kept a high pace in the group no other rivals risked it, and the duo kept a short gap through the final kilometers as both had good legs. Cepeda took up most of the pace so as to put pressure on Tao Geoghegan Hart, but that worked in the benefit of Kämna, who launched an acceleration inside the final kilometer and had four seconds at the line, taking an important win over a strong season.
"Of course, Cepeda worked a lot when he joined me in the front and I was able to save some energy," the 26-year old explained. "On the last kilometer I gave it my all and I am super happy with this victory. The team did an amazing job and I have to thank them a lot.” Vlasov then sprinted to second place, and Kämna rode from 11th to 6th in the overall classification, now sitting 45 seconds behind Tao Geoghegan Hart.
