It's not often you see a Tour de France winner decide to work as lead out man for his sprinter. Bradley Wiggins famously did it for Mark Cavendish as did, more recently, Geraint Thomas. At the 2023 Critérium du Dauphiné however, it's been Jonas Vingegaard working for Christophe Laporte.
According to Jumbo-Visma coach in an interview with In de Leiderstrui, Mathieu Heijboer, that decision was made solely by the Danish rider himself. "It was very difficult to control that course, so much so that we were actually one man short," Hejiboer explains. "Jonas then decided that he would not let all that work be for nothing and that he wanted to do his bit."
Although Vingegaard may be of a rather slight build compared to a typical lead out man, Christophe Laporte has benefitted greatly, taking two of the first three stages of the Critérium du Dauphiné and finishing fourth on the one he didn't win.
Heading into the stage 4 individual time-trial, Laporte holds the overall lead of the race although with Vingegaard the favourite for the stage win, the leaders jersey could be switching from Jumbo-Visma rider to Jumbo-Visma rider.
