As the 2025
Vuelta a Espana approaches, optimism is building around
Jonas Vingegaard’s chances in what promises to be one of the most compelling Grand Tours of the season.
Jesper Morkov, sporting director of
Team Visma | Lease a Bike, has expressed unwavering confidence in the two-time Tour de France winner’s form and mindset ahead of the race.
“We’re going to the race with Jonas to win it. That’s clear,” Morkov recently told the Café Eddy podcast. “Jonas is ready, Jonas is fresh, and Jonas is very much looking forward to it. My expectation is that as a team, we will ride very well.”
Morkov’s endorsement comes as no surprise given Vingegaard’s strong performances this year, but it marks a crucial moment in the rider’s season. After a challenging Tour de France where support was sometimes questioned, the addition of Morkov himself in the directeur sportif car signals a fresh approach and renewed focus for Vingegaard.
Previous commentary from former professional and analyst Brian Holm has highlighted how crucial it is for a rider to have a sports director who speaks their native language, particularly during high-pressure situations. Holm explained that even a rider as composed as Vingegaard can experience nerves, and the ability to receive clear, familiar instructions over the radio can provide a psychological edge. “You need sharp bulletins that you understand 100%. I assume you’re speaking English over the radio, but still; having a Dane in charge must provide some reassurance. It’s certainly not a disadvantage,” Holm said.
Morkov’s arrival brings not only linguistic comfort but also fresh tactical energy to the team. He acknowledges the distinct challenge the Vuelta presents, with its relentless climbs and complex race scenarios. “Jonas is one of the best climbers in the world right now, and the Vuelta suits his qualities,” Morkov said. “He’s in excellent shape, and the team around him is strong and motivated. We’ll do everything we can to set him up for victory.”
And with Tadej Pogacar absent from the startlist, Morkov is clear about Vingegaard’s standing: “He’s the favourite now that Pogacar has withdrawn. He might even be a super favourite.”
