Just days after a crash in the opening stage of the Baloise
Belgium Tour left
Jonas Abrahamsen with a broken collarbone and serious doubts
over his
Tour de France participation, there is now renewed hope for the Uno-X
Mobility rider.
In an update that will boost morale within the team, Uno-X
revealed that “new medical assessments have brought some optimism regarding
Jonas Abrahamsen’s collarbone injury.” A CT scan examined by a top shoulder
specialist indicated that the fracture is not as severe as first believed, and,
critically, “surgery may not be necessary.”
That doesn’t mean he’s a sure bet for July’s Grand Départ in
Lille, but the door is no longer shut. “While the chances of Jonas making it to
the start in Lille remain very slim, he is motivated to do everything possible
to be ready, and he will have the team’s full support during his recovery,” the
team said in a statement.
Abrahamsen has become one of Uno-X’s most valuable riders in
stage races thanks to his relentless breakaway efforts and strong legs in the
hills. His likely absence had opened the door for Alexander Kristoff to step
in, despite not being named in the initial shortlist of eight riders. The
veteran sprinter is still hunting for a 100th career victory before
retiring, but his path back into the squad may now be less straightforward.
Kristoff’s inclusion was widely assumed following
Abrahamsen’s crash, but if the Norwegian breakaway artist is able to make a
rapid recovery, Uno-X could face a tactical dilemma. Do they double down on
aggressive racing with Abrahamsen? Or do they pivot to stage hunting in the
sprints with Kristoff?
