Stage 6 of the Giro d'Italia was packed with crashes from start to finish. Among those who suffered were both Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic, however the only serious GC contender who lost time was Jay Vine. It was a tough hit to take as he lost 1:11 minutes on the line.
“After a fall—in the last seven kilometers, I think—it's impossible to come back. I'm not happy. My bike was no longer in a condition to continue," Vine told Eurosport. "So I had to wait for the team car. I was among the first twenty riders, but my handlebars were completely bent."
Vine crashed alongside the likes of Primoz Roglic, Kaden Groves and Fernando Gaviria, however he couldn't ride his bike and unlike Roglic he didn't have a teammate right away giving one to him. Vine managed to ride back into some groups, but then another crash happened inside the final 3 kilometers.
The Australian was not involved in that one however, and he was not given the same time as the first peloton. He arrived within the second peloton but the losses on the road were taken into consideration for the overall classification. After a strong start to the race Vine now descended from 10th to 21st in the GC, and is 2:19 minutes behind Remco Evenepoel.
