Alpecin-Deceuninck had their plan set out very well for
Scheldeprijs, and after taking several big triumphs this spring,
Jasper Philipsen has now conquered Scheldeprijs ahead of
Sam Welsford and
Mark Cavendish.
With calm weather this week, the racing conditions have turned out to be quite different. Hence, a normal breakaway went up the road on a day that was predicted to be for the sprinters. Ceriel Desal (Bingoal WB), Ruben Apers (Team Flanbers-Baloise), Filippo Ridolfo (Team Novo Nordisk), Bram Dissel and Vincent Hoppezak (BEAT Cycling Club), Giulio Masotto (Team Corratec) and Josh Kench (Bolton Equities Black Spoke) went up the road and formed the day's breakaway.
Despite flat towards the end several started to struggle, and the peloton had the group under control throughout the whole day. The catch was only made with 3 kilometers to go, but all teams saved their firepower for those final minutes of racing.
Alpecin and Lotto Dstny had strong leadouts and managed to position their leaders well. In the final sprint Edward Theuns was the first to launch his bid for the line, with Mark Cavendish alongside. Jasper Philipsen was close to the barriers but found enough space to get through. He sprinted to the win, as Sam Welsford and Mark Cavendish completed the podium.
