The Australian stage-racer from
Bahrain - Victorious has been on the uprising for many years as an elite rider and last year he finally confirmed his potential by finishing on the podium of the Vuelta a España. Now, in 2022, he will return to what was his original goal in the last season as he eyes to finish high up on the general classification of the
Tour de France this year.
“The goal is the Tour. I want to try to do my best and be as consistent as I can. I want to take the confidence from the Vuelta last year, and aim for a high GC position at the Tour," Haig said in an interview with VeloNews at the
Vuelta a Andalucia where he is currently racing. After showing good form and performing on the opening stages of the Spanish race, he is now sitting fourth in the overall. His teammate however,
Wout Poels, net the queen stage yesterday as Bahrain was a part of the GC raid, and now lead the race with good chances to seal it as there are no bonifications.
Haig however looks ahead. At 28 years of age he seems to be reaching the peak of his career and with Bahrain - Victorious having a great run of results last year, they will be motivated to get strong results again and Haig will be a part of that. He has discussed some of his upcoming goals, before he resets and focuses on a summer of racing in France.
“I’m trying to do the best I can in all the races, and from that, a good result can come. Last year, I was good at Paris-Nice, and I was a bit better at Catalunya, and I think I would have been quite good at the Tour if I had not crashed. It means a lot, it was super nice to get the result [at the Vuelta]. I always dreamed of doing a podium in a grand tour, and to actually prove it to myself was really nice," Haig completed with.
For now, his short-term goal should be to help the team guarrantee the overall win at the Vuelta a Andalucia.
