Under the unrelenting rain, new junior world champion was born. Still only 17 year old,
Lorenzo Finn was a cut above the rest on the tricky circuit in Zurich and won with a margin of more than two minutes - largest winning gap in the history of the category.
Finn went solo for the first time with more than sixty kilometers. He was then caught by an elite group, but on the last steep climb he rode away again, now with defending champion Albert Philipsen. When the latter crashed, Finn went away alone again. And he quickly extended his lead on the chasers. "I felt great today. I've probably never had such good legs," the Italian climber said after the race.
"When I went alone the first time, I thought: this might be a bit early. But Philipsen and some other guys crossed. Then I just wanted to go all out on the climb. Albert fell behind me. I hope he's okay. But when I rode away again, I knew it was over."
Although Finn is half British, he doesn’t like the rain. "I like 35 degrees and sunshine, but today it was perfect," said the rider of GRENKE – Auto Eder, the junior team of Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe. His cycling future looks bright after winning this world title. "We’ll see what happens in the next few years. I’ll be riding with the promises for the next two years. That’s where I want to continue to develop. I’m just enjoying the moment now."
