He might not be the force he once was in the Classics, but Julian Alaphilippe has shown signs this Spring that there might yet be a big result or two still to come for the Frenchman in 2025. Ahead of Liege-Bastogne-Liege this Sunday afternoon, Alaphilippe is quietly confident in his own level.
“I’m feeling really good, motivated," the Tudor Pro Cycling Team star told reporters on Saturday at the pre-race presentation for the final race of the Ardennes Classics. "With the nice weather expected, I can’t wait for tomorrow.”
Twice in his career, Alaphilippe has finished runner-up at Liege-Bastogne-Liege, losing out in 2015 to Alejandro Valverde and in 2021 to Tadej Pogacar. Already in 2025, the Frenchman has had battles with Pogacar too, most notably at the recent Amstel Gold Race where it was Alaphilippe's early attack that drew out the world champion's own long-range move. Can we expect similarly early attacking from Alaphilippe at Liege-Bastogne-Liege?
“Will you see me attack like I did at Amstel? I don’t know, but I hope I’ll have good legs to enjoy myself and go for a result, because I really want it," he answers thoughtfully. "I’ve been feeling good for a few weeks now, even if the results haven’t shown it.”
“There haven’t been results anywhere, even though I did everything I could to arrive at these races in top shape. I’ve still got Liège and the GP Frankfurt on Thursday, so I’ll give it everything," concludes the 32-year-old. "We’ll have the race briefing tonight, but what matters most is the feeling, the legs, and making the effort at the right moment.”
