The defending champion at Milano-Sanremo, Jasper Philipsen's hopes of defending his crown took a significant blow earlier this week as the Belgian crashed hard out of Nokere Koerse, leaving the race in the back of an ambulance.
The Belgian had looked to be in tip-top form all day long too, consistently being active at the front, putting his rivals into difficulty and showing off some incredibly strong legs. As preparation began for the final sprint to the line though, everything quite literally came crashing down for Philipsen as he summersaulted in a nasty crash. After staying down for a while and looking in serious pain, he was eventually shepherded into the back of an ambulance for further treatment.
Despite this however, Philipsen is determined to keep himself in the mix this coming weekend. "The crash obviously had a huge impact on my body," says Philipsen in a press release, announcing his intention to compete despite any lingering issues effecting him following the hard Nokere Koerse crash. "With a lot of abrasions and a few stitches, it won’t be easy, but I want to give it a shot. And if I don’t feel great in the final, I will of course support the team."
Great news! 🔥@JasperPhilipsen is heading to Milan and will start @Milano_Sanremo on Saturday! He will be there to defend his title, but whether he’ll be at his best after the crash in Nokere remains to be seen.
