The second stage of Vuelta a Espana had many falls due to the heavy rain in Spain. Geraint Thomas also did not cross the finish line unscathed. The INEOS Grenadiers leader slipped together with Primož Roglic and fell on his knee.
"I'm okay. It was an unfortunate fall and I fell on my knee, but luckily it's going well," said Thomas. "Roglic and UAE fell right in front of me. Together with the team I was well in front, so I was not dropped from the peloton. The guys knew I had fallen and they stayed with me."
After the crash of their leader, Jumbo-Visma tried to push the pace in the peloton, but other teams did not want to cooperate with the Dutch formation. "It was indeed very slippery, but there is always someone who wants to continue. Especially now that the times were taken early. DSM wanted to get back and other teams wanted to compete for the stage. Everyone has their ambitions."
Thomas did not blame the other teams for keeping up the pace. Although he thought it was sometimes too wild. "It's very understandable. I understand that you want to go for the ride, but don't go full throttle on roundabouts. There were crashes almost everywhere. You also have to look out for each other. It's our job. You want to do it right, but for me is not worth falling."
