The future of a number of races on the women's cycling calendar are currently at risk. With the E3 Saxo Classic being cancelled and financial issues leaving the Women's Tour all but certain to follow suit.
"I'm really sorry to hear the news," Lizzie Deignan, one of the biggest names in women's cycling told Cycling Weekly. "I hope this isn't the end for the Women's Tour as that would be such a shame for women's cycling in the UK. It is such an iconic race with a big following and fan base so I still hope it can return."
The problems surrounding the Women's Tour stem from the financial backer, SweetSpot going into liquidation following severe financial difficulties. “This year it also falls at a crucial time in the season for Olympic preparation so the uncertainty around whether it is happening or not is frustrating," Deignan continues.
“It’s encouraging that British Cycling have said they are making every effort to make sure it happens though and I hope we can get some clarification soon.”
