At just 16 years of age, Albert Philipsen has announced himself as a potential star of the future at the Glasgow World Championships. The young Dane took a stunning solo victory in the men's junior road race, winning by over a minute.
“Our plan was to race offensively. We wanted to make the race hard,” Philipsen said in his post-race interview, immediately following the stage. "We played really well as a team in this group of seven. On the penultimate lap I put in a small attack and got a small gap from the rest. When I went I knew I could get away. I just had to wait for the right moment. From there I went full throttle.”
The victory actually made a little bit of cycling history too, as the 16-year-old broke the record of Olivier Le Gac from 2010 for the youngest ever road world champion.
“I felt very, very good. As we got more laps in my legs, I didn't get more tired. It felt like I had just started. What was going through my mind when I crossed the line? It feels a bit strange," he admits. "I have dreamed of this and worked towards it for so long… It is unbelievable that it has finally happened.”
