After the Tour de France,
Kévin Vauquelin tripped whilst walking down the stairs in his home and suffered a leg fracture. It is odd that pro cyclists, who undergo such dangerous training and racing conditions, get injured from unusual home accidents but it happens from time to time. This week,
Movistar Team's
Davide Formolo was victim to one, after a cup of tea fell on his foot and that will delay his season start for several weeks.
Such is the luck for such riders however, as anything can happen at anytime. In Formolo's case, it was a huge deal of bad luck, which at first felt like nothing, but ended up turning out to be a serious health issue.
"Life is strange. You ride about 30,000 kilometres a year on roads with trucks that pass you within 2 centimeters of your handlebars," he shared on Instagram. "You hurdle down wet descents you don't even know like a kamikaze, then a cup of tea falls on your foot and creates this little cut... It doesn't seem like anything at first, but I noticed I couldn't lift my big toe, so no way: six weeks off".
A tendon injury is the outcome, or if he will require to take all that time off the bike or training on the road specifically, but in the end it is an injury that will significantly delay his preparation towards the start of the season, at a time where Movistar is preparing for their training camp in Spain.
In 2025 the Italian was rather absent from the action, having a difficult time reaching the same level he had at BORA and UAE since joining the Spanish team. He raced 60 days this season, including a 14th place at Strade Bianche; racing the whole Giro d'Italia; and featuring a few Top10 spots in the late-season classics.
