Team Visma | Lease a Bike have had three major tests in the battle for the overall classification over the Catalan Grand Depart, and they have ended them with Jonas Vingegaard tied on time with Tadej Pogacar. That situation could've changed and turned to the Slovenian's side this Wednesday afternoon in Pau, but quick reaction from the Dutch team saw Vingegaard avoid time losses after a crash.

The end of stage 5 was fast and quite tense, with the sprinter teams fighting in every inch of the road. The technical section of the final sprint began with 5.8 kilometers to go and a mass crash took place there, with several riders going down.
It had not been clear at first, but in some way Jonas Vingegaard was involved. It couldn't be confirmed in that moment if he had crashes, but what was learnt shortly after on the Visma bus was that the Dane had to change bikes. That explained his late arrival to the finish, around 25 seconds behind the first peloton, but it did not lead to a gap to the likes of Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel.
Team DS Marc Reef had confirmed the lack of time gaps to Sporza: “There were riders in between everywhere, so there were no gaps of three seconds. There were about ten seconds between Pogacar and Jonas, but with riders in between, which meant that everyone is given the same time.”

Victor Campenaerts immediately gave his bike to Pogacar

However, there were moments of tension, as Reef explained to TV2. “We heard that Jonas was in the crash, or at least involved in some way. He quickly got a new bike from Victor Campenaerts, and the boys were quickly with him. They rode hard for him, and in the end, everyone came in at the same time.”
The quick reaction saw the Dane remain in the peloton and then, supported by his teammates, chase back into a position where he would not lose time. A day saved for Visma, who could've lost precious time in a battle that so far against UAE Team Emirates - XRG is coming down to mere seconds.
“We knew it was a dangerous turn with a pavement on the right-hand side. We knew it was coming. I still think it was a good way we handled the final, and we were there together".
"It always gets a bit hectic if there’s a crash, but in the end, Jonas got his bike from Victor, we rode hard to the finish line, and it didn’t cost us anything," Reef concluded.
