Michael Storer is a rider who's evolved at an interesting pace over the past few years, and after taking a step down to ProTeam level in 2024, he found consistency and his best ever level with Tudor Pro Cycling Team. In words to CyclingUpToDate, the Australian climber answers whether he would prefer to keep being a GC contender or chase wins at the Grand Tours.
A question that surely lies on the shoulders of the 27-year old, rider for teams such as (now named) Jayco AlUla, Picnic PostNL and Groupama - FDJ before joining the Swiss team. In 2021 Storer had a big breakthrough with two victories at the Vuelta a España.
A pure climber, it was certain that he could aim for high results and seize his under-the-radar position to aim for breakaway wins. But in 2024, against all odds, we've seen a Storer that has not only become a solid GC rider all-round, but also one who can handle an entire Grand Tour.
After finishing an impressive 6th position at the UAE Tour, Storer went on to finish 7th at the Tour of the Alps and then race a virtually spotless Giro d'Italia, the team's first-ever Grand Tour, where he finished 10th in the overall classification. This Top10 place came only in the final mountain stage of the race, proving that he is also very capable of handling the third week. A 5th spot at the Vuelta a Burgos and 13th at Il Lombardia brought in further results and UCI points, important to the team in search of wildcards.
Tudor is likely to race a Grand Tour in 2025, with the entry of stars such as Julian Alaphilippe and Marc Hirschi. Even a Tour de France presence is quite possible at this point, but whether he would aim for GC or stage wins is one he hasn't decided yet.
"That's an extremely hard question. I'm missing a stage in the Giro and the Tour so that would be really really nice to complete - a Grand stage in every Grand Tour," he responded. "But I've raced for GC in 2024 and I had some really positive experiences so I think I'm just open to either, or both, if you could win a stage and go for GC at the same time it would be great".
