Isaac del Toro had been rumoured to be preparing his Giro d'Italia debut in 2025 and that has been confirmed today at the UAE Team Emirates camp. The Mexican rider, now with one pro season in the bag, enters 2025 as a slightly more experienced rider and knows where he should improve to get even better results.
Del Toro is still a young rider, and makes it clear that his main goal at the moment is to evolve when it comes to endurance. "Just to be better in average watts and better when the time passes, 4 or 5 hours (he refers to longer rides and endurance, ed.). Racing with [a lot] time that is an off for me".
This year he hit the ground running at the Australian races, taking also his first pro win at the Tour Down Under. A fourth place at Tirreno-Adriatico, 7th at Itzulia Basque Country and overall win at the Vuelta Asturias proved his talent as a consistent stage-racer for the one-week races. But Grand Tours are a different monster, and he did not show much during his debut Vuelta a España.
Interestingly Del Toro jokes that he is one of the riders who trains less in UAE, and has also talked about a transition into living in Europe. He admits that he often trains alone, based in San Marino, not because of the lack of riders around but because he aims to be professional and ride the sessions exactly as are asked of him.
Del Toro started the season at the Tour Down Under this year, but will not make the trip to Australia next January. "I have a lot of goals but the goals are for me. I start in AlUla and then I see if we can do it with good legs," he added, not knowing however if he will add that to the UAE Tour later on where Tadej Pogacar is scheduled to ride.
Del Toro did confirm to CyclingUpToDate and a group of news outlets that he will race the Giro d'Italia and that he is given freedom by the team to perform in general, which suits him. However it is expected that the Giro he will have a support role for Adam Yates and Juan Ayuso who have been confirmed to lead the lineup for the Corsa Rosa.
