Jonas Vingegaard continued to look in fine form at the 2025 Criterium du Dauphine on stage 4. In fact, the
Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider was the best of the rest against the clock, only being beaten by the Olympic and World time trial champion
Remco Evenepoel.
"I think to be honest, I can be pretty satisfied with how today went," reflected a content Vingegaard in his post-stage interview with Cycling Pro Net, having crossed the finish line 21 seconds down on stage winner Evenepoel. "Remco is the best time trialist in the world, so to only lose 20 seconds to him in this time trial is pretty decent, I would say. And also taking time today — in the end, I think I can be happy with my performance."
As mentioned by Vingegaard there, other than Evenepoel, the Dane took time from all his GC rivals, including 30 seconds on his arch-rival
Tadej Pogacar. As such, he ends stage 4 sitting 5th in the general classification, just 16 seconds off the Maillot Jaune. "I mean, of course, it’s always better to be in front than behind. But on the other hand, I’m also behind Remco. So I have some time to make up," he assesses. "We've seen in the last years that in the mountains, you can make up a lot of time. So it will be interesting — the upcoming four days."
And Vingegaard is also pretty certain that this was the best he could have hoped for on the day too. "I didn't have problems. I just ran a bit out of gear. Maybe I should have had a bigger chainring in the front. But I don’t think it changed much. It was just on one of the very fast parts — I needed a bit of a bigger gear," analysed the Dane. "But yeah, it’s not like I would have gained even 5 seconds. So, no big deal."
