Egan Bernal heads to the 2026 Tour de France with a very different mindset from his peak years as a GC contender. The Colombian, winner of the race in 2019, has accepted that his role at INEOS Grenadiers will be more attacking and less focused on the overall, something he summed up clearly by saying he is ready "to race aggressively".
That shift in mentality completely shapes his presence at the Grande Boucle. Bernal has set aside the idea of fighting for yellow and stated bluntly that "I don’t think I can fight for the GC," a line that reflects his new place within the British team.
Away from that target, the Colombian is aiming for a different kind of prominence in the race. His plan is to use the hardest stages to slip into offensive moves and fight for stage wins. In that context, he insists the squad has enough depth to be visible almost every day, since "we have a strong team that can make its mark on almost every stage".
The approach also changes how he tackles the race as a whole. Bernal doesn’t want to think in broad, long-term goals, but in a more immediate management of effort, where each day can open a different opportunity. That’s why he stresses that "we must try it day by day, we’ll live in the moment," an idea that sums up his new style in the peloton.

This plan also aligns with the rider’s physical and competitive reality in recent years, where Grand Tours have become tougher to control from start to finish. In fact, Bernal himself has acknowledged that taking on three Grand Tours in a single season is extremely demanding, a nod to the workload of the modern calendar.

With this change of role, the Colombian approaches the 2026 Tour de France from a different angle: free from GC pressure, but intent on remaining an influential racer, looking for openings and embracing a scenario where improvisation and aggression are his main tools.
We’ll see what the Colombian climber can achieve after a low-key Giro, where he worked for Arensman and never had a real chance to beat his rivals for the win.
