Jonas Vingegaard insisted he could be satisfied with stage 2 of the 2026 Tour de France, even after Tadej Pogacar reduced his yellow jersey lead to just six seconds in Barcelona.
Vingegaard finished fourth on the stage, on the same time as Isaac del Toro, Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel, so the Dane was not dropped in the Montjuic finale. Pogacar’s gain came through bonus seconds after he finished second behind Del Toro in UAE Team Emirates – XRG’s one-two at the Olympic Stadium.
Speaking to TV 2 Sport after the finish, Vingegaard focused on retaining yellow rather than the seconds conceded to his biggest rival. “I actually think I can be quite satisfied,” Vingegaard said. “I lose six seconds to Pogacar, and I can be satisfied with that. I keep the leader’s jersey and get another day in it tomorrow, and I will enjoy that.”
The Team Visma | Lease a Bike leader had started the day in yellow after his team’s victory in the opening team time trial. Stage 2 always looked dangerous for Visma, with the repeated climbs of Montjuic offering Pogacar and UAE a clear chance to test the first road-stage selection of the race. “I have had a good start to the Tour this year, and that is not always a given,” Vingegaard continued. “I am extremely happy with how it has gone.”

UAE controlled the decisive finale through Brandon McNulty, Adam Yates, Pogacar and Del Toro, reducing the favourites’ group before the final run towards the Olympic Stadium. Del Toro eventually took the victory after Pogacar allowed his teammate to cross the line first, while Evenepoel sprinted to third and Vingegaard followed in fourth.
The front group all received the same time, but the bonus seconds still changed the early shape of the general classification. Pogacar moved up to second overall, six seconds behind Vingegaard, while Evenepoel rose to third at 15 seconds and Del Toro climbed to fourth at 16 seconds.
Vingegaard also acknowledged the strength of the two UAE riders who shaped the finish. “They are both quite punchy, and it is a finale that suits them both well,” he said of Pogacar and Del Toro. “They deserve the victory, and they did really well.”

Yellow retained, Pogacar closer

For UAE, stage 2 was a major early statement. Del Toro took the stage win, moved into the white jersey, led the points classification and helped UAE take over the team standings, while Pogacar reduced the gap to yellow without needing to distance Vingegaard on the road.
Visma’s day was quieter, but Vingegaard avoided a direct time gap on a finale that suited UAE’s punchier riders. He leaves Barcelona still in yellow, still ahead of Pogacar, and with another day in the leader’s jersey to come.
