Eritrean cycling star
Biniam Girmay's influence far transcends
just sports. While the sprinter enjoys a superstar status in cycling, back home in Eritrea, he is close to being a national hero thanks to his deeds on two wheels. As a role model for young Eritreans, the 25-year-old now joins the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as the National Goodwill Ambassador for Climate Action and Youth Empowerment for Eritrea.
"I am deeply honored to accept this appointment as UNDP Eritrea’s Goodwill Ambassador. This is not just a personal honor, but a profound responsibility. As UNDP Goodwill Ambassador, I will strive to use my influence for the greater good, advocating for climate action and supporting Eritrea’s sustainable development on the African continent and beyond," the Eritrean wrote on his Instagram.
A United Nations Goodwill Ambassador is a distinguished individual who volunteers their time and influence to raise awareness of the UN's work and its efforts to improve the lives of people around the world.
In the past, football superstars such as Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane or tennis player Maria Sharapova have been bestowed upon this honor.
