Not for the first time in his career,
Jay Vine was given a face to face meeting the tarmac on stage 1 of the 2025
Giro d'Italia. Although the crash looked nasty enough to potentially end the Aussie's Grand Tour, Vine has impressively bounced back on stage 2, putting in a big performance on the time trial bike.
“I was a bit worried last night about my knee and whether I would take the start today," Vine admitted in
post-stage comments posted to the official website of the
UAE Team Emirates - XRG squad after finishing the day with the 3rd fastest time, only bettered by stage winner Joshua Tarling and the new Maglia Rosa, Primoz Roglic. "But after breakfast and the recon, I felt I could still push, and I didn’t want to waste the opportunity to perform in my favourite event, the time trial."
The impressive time trial performance once again shows the incredible powers of resilience Vine has. Last year, the Aussie spent time in intensive care and in a neck brace after getting caught up in the disaster crash at the Itzulia Basque Country, but has since worked his way back to full fitness and top form. Hopefully now, Vine can continue this strong form for the rest of the 2025 Giro d'Italia crash free.
“I went ahead and prepared as normal, and I am really happy to come away with a podium," concludes Vine happily. "The form is definitely there, so I look forward to the rest of the Giro and I’m incredibly grateful my injuries weren’t more severe.”
