Fernando Gaviria knows what it takes to win a stage at the Giro d'Italia. As the 2023 edition of the race nears, the Movistar Team sprinter has laid out his goals for the race and outlined his intention to take the points jersey.
"I want to win stages, but it would also be nice to reach Rome with the points jersey," the 28-year-old told Cycling Pro prior to starting stage one of the Tour de Romandie. “My form is good. I was able to train well in Italy and Mallorca. I am happy that there are still a few more race days here towards the Giro.”
In total the Colombian has five Giro d'Italia stage wins to his name, most recently in 2019 and has won the race's points classification jersey back in 2017. After using the Tour de Romandie as a final tune-up prior to the three-week Italian stage race, Gaviria is confident he can have more success in Italy.
"It's a tough ride, so we'll see what happens," Gaviria says of the Tour de Romandie. "I will do my best and who knows we can play for the victory. I haven't raced for a month, so you can see how I feel."
