After finishing seventh overall at the UAE Tour, where he looked competitive on the mountaintop finishes to Jebel Jais and Jebel Hafeet, Max Poole has continued to show his good form with a strong performance in the opening stage of Tirreno-Adriatico around Lido di Camaiore.
The young British rider finished 13th in a race against the clock on stage 1, his best result in a WorldTour time trial since stage 3 of last year’s Tour de Romandie, putting him in a good position in the general classification for the rest of the race.
Poole finished 26 seconds off the pace of stage winner Juan Ayuso, with only four seconds to pre-race favourite Jonas Vingegaard. However, the stages to decide the overall winner are still yet to come, with the queen stage to Monte Petrano set to be decisive on stage 6.
On his effort in the time trial, Poole said “I think I can be quite happy with my ride knowing the time in the end. The legs didn’t feel too great but I managed to keep things going until the line. We had a pacing plan from the team and I just ticked off the kilometres”.
Having beaten many of the pre-race favourites for the general classification, along with several time trial specialists, Poole was satisfied with his opening stage, as he said that “with the result in the end I think it’s a nice start for us”.
