As
Remco Evenepoel powers through his second
Tour de France,
already with a stage win in the time trial and firmly the favourite for the
white jersey, rumours about his future continue to swirl. Despite being locked
into a contract with Soudal – Quick-Step, speculation around a potential move
to Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe refuses to go away.
“2026 is still a long way off. Obviously, I can't comment on
these kinds of things,” Evenepoel said when asked about the ongoing chatter.
“There's speculation, and we have to keep everyone happy. Of course, a lot is
happening, but that's been the case for years.”
The Belgian star has had to field transfer questions
repeatedly throughout the season, and he’s clearly grown weary of the noise.
“I read a lot of articles that aren't true, unfortunately,”
he said. “I had a big discussion with Jurgen Foré about this topic, because
he's also concerned. We talked about it, and everything is clear. So that's the
answer I can give.”
The reason for the potential move is clear for everyone to
see. Evenepoel does not have the team around him that the likes of Pogacar and
Vingegaard do, and Quick-Step do not have the resources. Perhaps this rumour
mill will settle itself after July.
