After difficult day of racing on stage 3 of the AlUla Tour, Casper van Uden reclaimed the overall lead of the race from Søren Wærenskjold, as the Norwegian got caught out in a crosswind section before suffering an untimely mechanical, which made it impossible for him to return to the front of the race.
The Uno-X rider would eventually finish in 94th on the stage, more than five minutes down on the stage winner Tim Merlier. Van Uden finished third on the stage, opening up his sprint early before being passed by Merlier and Arvid de Kleijn in the final hundred metres. The Dutchman’s win on stage 1 and the four bonus seconds that he picked up at the finish meant that he would take back the leader’s green jersey that he had lost to Wærenskjold on the uphill finish the previous day.
In his post-race interview for the Team dsm–firmenich PostNL website, Van Uden said “the boys worked really hard to keep me in a good position today with the echelon stress and in the end Nils [Eekhoff] and I made the front split. At the finish Nils put me in a good position. I opened the sprint a little too early but we still managed to grab a third place which is nice, and we go back into the race lead”.
