After his victory at Paris-Nice earlier in the year,
Matteo Jorgenson has kept his hopes of taking the win at the 2024 Criterium du Dauphine alive, moving up to 2nd overall on the stage 7 summit finish.
“Today everything went well for me,” the American reflected afterwards in a
press release on the Team Visma | Lease a Bike website. "Before this final weekend, I thought these stages might be too tough. I have little experience in stages with more than four thousand altimeters. I tried to reach the foot of the final climb as economically as possible. So I was relieved there was still something in the legs in the final. It's all new to me, but I keep pushing my limits. I keep surprising myself a bit."
Coming into the final kilometre in a strong group of nine, Jorgenson was the first to react to an attack from BORA - hansgrohe leader Primoz Roglic. Despite the 24-year-old's best efforts however, Jorgenson was unable to do anything other than follow the wheel of the Maillot Jaune as Roglic took the stage win for the second day in a row. With Remco Evenepoel dropping down the rankings however, Jorgenson moves up to 2nd overall, now 1:02 on the Slovenian in the Maillot Jaune.
"I only thought about the stage win in the last kilometre,” Jorgenson concludes his recap of the day's events. "Throughout the day I was only concentrating on energy saving, so I wasn't thinking about a possible stage win. In the last kilometre I realised it was still possible, but it was hard to beat Roglic on a finish like this. I got the maximum out of it today. I'm very satisfied with that."
