Mikel Landa had his last opportunity to make a bid for the Giro d'Italia win yesterday, but despite the extensive work of Bahrain - Victorious, a move didn't come from the team which got many wondering why.

Sure enough, Landa didn't have the legs to follow the attack of Jai Hindley, but rode a strong final ascent and got closer to the second place which now belongs to Richard Carapaz. “I haven't felt well all day. I couldn't squeeze the team because I couldn't even follow them," Landa said, justifying why Bahrain didn't attack the Passo san Pellegrino or the Passo Pordoi as expected.

“In the end I have regulated myself a little. I have seen that Carapaz was there and that he was less. I was feeling better and better," he added. The steep slopes of the Passo Fedaia favoured him, and Landa took 39 seconds of former race leader Richard Carapaz as the Ecuadorian cracked.

“It seems like a long way, but if today [Carapaz] ended very empty… Who knows. Tomorrow it will be tried," Landa concluded, as he will go onto attempt a rise to the second place in the final GC. He has 26 seconds to take back on Carapaz, a very complicated task, but not an impossible one.
