Cian Uijtdebroeks had a particularly strong debut in a grand tour. In the Vuelta, the only twenty-year-old Belgian managed to make his mark by finishing eighth overall. The man from BORA-hansgrohe looks back on his very first Vuelta a Espana.
The always cheerful Belgian looks back on his first grand tour at Sporza with great pleasure. "I enjoyed the stages to Tourmalet and Angliru. It was fantastic to stay close to the top riders on those mythical climbs. I won't soon forget that." At twenty years old, Uijtdebroeks is the youngest Belgian to ever finish in the top ten of a Grand Tour. "I didn't even know that," Uijtdebroeks responds, laughing.
Uijtdebroeks knows what he needs to work on in the near future to achieve an even better result. "I still miss the pure power a bit. With my little effort I stay behind the competitors when they accelerate, so as not to exhaust my muscles. Others can close such a gap more quickly in the face of major resistance." According to the Belgian, the time trial also needs to be improved. "My strength is quite similar to my teammate Aleksandr Vlasov, but my aerodynamics is much less. I really have to work on my position. The speed is there and I can ride consistently, but I lose everything in aerodynamics."
Next year Uijtdebroeks hopes to ride another Grand Tour. The Belgian decides whether he will ride the Giro or Vuelta depending on the course. "I have to see where there are the most elevation meters and the fewest time trial kilometers. It's a bit of the opposite of Remco Evenepoel."
