After two days in the overall lead at the 2024 Vuelta a Espana, Wout van Aert passed on the Red Jersey to his former teammate Primoz Roglic after the first summit finish of the race on stage 4.
"It was especially warm today," reflected the Team Visma | Lease a Bike star in his post-stage interview afterwards, having always expected to be losing the Red Jersey after the staggeringly steep slopes of the final climb of the day, with the brutality exacerbated by the intense heat of the Spanish sun. "I think everybody suffered from that."
Despite Van Aert being in the Red Jersey, it wasn't Team Visma | Lease a Bike on the front of the peloton all day, with that honour instead going to Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe, a decision that was rewarded with Roglic's stage win. "I think the race was more controlled than everybody expected. Bora was really willing to control this race," Van Aert assesses. "When I came to the top, I saw they were successful. Besides from that, I have no clue what happened on the final climb."
Nevertheless, the Belgian enjoyed his likely final day in the Red Jersey this Grand Tour, buoyed by his first win in six months the day prior. "To be honest, it was a nice day. A lot of guys reaching out to me (to congratulate for the stage win). I always felt really good," he concludes. "For sure, it was easier to pedal after yesterday’s victory!"
