INEOS Grenadiers came into the
Tour de France with Carlos Rodríguez aiming for the overall classification, but also with several riders capable of fighting for stage wins in the hilly days.
Filippo Ganna had this noted as a big goal for the season and was aiming for victories but was forced to abandon right on the first day. He looks back to that day currently and admits he does not remember the crash.
"I don't remember anything about the crash, zero," Ganna told Gazzetta dello Sport, two weeks after the incident. The Italian rider fell right on the first day of the race, potentially even in what was the first fall of the Tour itself. With over 130 kilometers to go on the stage starting and finishing in Lille he and Sean Flynn hit the deck. Ganna continued the race for over an hour despite having suffered a concussion.
Still, he abandoned the race during the stage itself, having been recommended. At the time, Geraint Thomas described his teammate's situation: "Obviously, Pippo had a little crash. It looked okay at the time, but I think he might have knocked his head or something and he was told to stop. So yeah, it was not a great way to start."
Ganna will be racing the Vuelta a España if all goes according to plan for the time-trialist, as the race is starting in Italy and quite close to home as well in the region of Torino.
