VIDEO | Spectator footage reveals Mattias Skjelmose Tour de France-ending crash

The Tour de France is constantly filmed by several cameras simultaneously but at times some crashes happen outside of what is possible to see in the TV broadcasts. However, at this point in time many of the thousands of fans that line up every day at the side of the road are filming their experience, and their videos allow for a better understanding of how some race situations develop. In this case, it has been showed how exactly Mattias Skjelmose crashed.

The Danish rider started stage 14 with ambitions of getting in the day's breakaway, as his GC goals slightly faded and he began prioritizing a stage win or the KOM jersey. Shortly after leaving Pau however, this plan was turned on it's head as he crashed into road furniture.

The Lidl-Trek rider lost several minutes on the road and looked in difficulty when getting back on the bike. He suffered a large wound on the left arm which required treatment and ultimately he abandoned the race. A spectator-recorded video shows a direct view of the impact:
