Ahead of his return to racing at the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Wout van Aert expressed his surprise regarding long-time sports director Grischa Niermann's departure to rival team Lidl-Trek. While team CEO Richard Plugge labeled the move "the end of an era," Van Aert remains highly confident that Team Visma | Lease a Bike's organizational structure can handle the transition to Marc Reef, shrugging off broader concerns about the squad's recent wave of high-profile staff turnover.

A sudden parting of ways

Niermann has been a staple of the team's leadership since Van Aert arrived, making the news particularly impactful for the Belgian rider.
"When I heard the news, I was obviously surprised," Van Aert told Het Nieuwsblad. "When I joined the team in 2019, Grischa was already part of the squad. Grischa and I had a very good relationship. We worked together for a very long time, and I would have loved to continue working with him. Of course, it’s unfortunate news to receive."
While Niermann will formally remain under contract with Visma | Lease a Bike until the end of August, he will not be part of the staff line-up for the upcoming Tour de France. This means Van Aert has likely already ridden his final race under Niermann's direct guidance.
Niermann's responsibilities will be absorbed by Marc Reef. Despite the change in the organizational structure, Van Aert expects the team's foundational systems to keep them steady. "It will obviously have an impact," Van Aert noted regarding the change. "Everyone works differently. Marc is going to fill that role in his own way."
"As a team, we have built an organization in which we try to train and develop people. I am really not afraid that it will all collapse like a house of cards here."

No concerns over recent staff turnover

Niermann's exit is the latest in a series of high-profile staff departures from the Dutch WorldTour team over the last 18 months. Former sporting director Merijn Zeeman left a year and a half ago to join the AZ Alkmaar football club, and trainer Tim Heemskerk departed in January to join Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe.
Despite the pattern, Van Aert does not believe there is a symptom of a larger problem within the organization. "You have to look at each story in its context," Van Aert concluded. "It's different every single time. I am really not worried about the future."
