Caleb Ewan is a rider that on his prime has won at Hatta Dam, climbed along the best at the Poggio di Sanremo and showed his climbing skills all throughout the calendar. In good form, the leader of Lotto Dstny hopes to perform today at the Tour de France in a hilly finale.
“I got boxed in close to the finish. After that my sprint was done. That's part of it, isn't it. Sometimes you are lucky and sometimes you are not," Caleb Ewan said after the finale of the seventh day of racing in the Grand Boucle. "Now we must continue. I am completely focused on Saturday's stage.”
Ewan is a rider who frequently struggles with positioning, however has gotten through the opening two sprints quite well, coming on the verge of victory on stage 4 to Nogaro - which would be his first Grand Tour win since the 2021 Giro d'Italia. Having good legs was not enough yesterday as he was blocked out of the sprint, coming in 45th position at the end of the day.
Today in Limoges the peloton find a hilly finale which will suit different types of riders, perhaps the Australian will be one of them. The stage doesn't feature any hills that are too difficult but rolling terrain and a fierce fight for positioning certain for the final hour of racing. If the Pocket Rocket survives that terrain, he will then have to contest the sprint in a final drag to the line which averages 4% for 700 meters, a finale that could very well suit the Australian.
